The Hunger Crisis in India
The pandemic has been accompanied by a food crisis in India. The worst-hit are the homeless, slum dwellers, malnourished women and children. Over 100 million people are not covered by the current ration distribution system run by the central government. A large chunk of this number are the daily wage workers. According to an estimate by the Stranded Workers Action Network, the need for food is five times the ration reaching these daily wage workers.
The internet is filled with striking images of extreme hunger in the country and testimonials of people, who are finding it difficult to have a proper meal. The intensity of the crisis is such that there is an overwhelming need to step up and reach out with relief.
